There are approximately 6.75 million car accidents each year in the US. That works out to 13 accidents every minute of the day! If you happen to be one of the unlucky 13 here are a few tips to follow to make the process less stressful.
First, stay calm. Check to make sure everyone in your car is okay as well as the other driver and their passengers.
Next, stay safe. Move your vehicle out of traffic if it’s safe to drive. We’ve all seen multi-car pile ups after an accident. Beware of other drivers approaching the scene as rubberneckers can lead to additional damages and injuries.
Call 911 and wait for the police to arrive. While you are waiting, exchange information. If you can, take a picture of the other driver’s license and insurance ID card. Also, take a picture of their plate and a picture of the damages to both vehicles.
So many factors play into an accident happening so don’t be quick to admit fault. It’s best to just simply state the facts such as how fast you were going, what direction you were heading, and what you were doing just before the accident. Let the police sort things out.
If there are witnesses, get their names and contact information.
Call your agent (Ten Eyck Group) or your insurance company and report the claim as soon as possible to get the process started.
Car accidents can be very unsettling. If you happen to be one of the unlucky ones that is involved in an accident follow the above tips and most importantly, stay calm, stay safe, call 911.
